STUDY TASK 7

Contact Report - The Goods Franchise (Goods Department)

STUDY TASK 8

Final Presentation - Our Collective

I relatively had a good experience working in this group. We cooperated and worked well with one another through assigning individual roles and tasks. That method of working was very helpful. This wasn't my first time working with other people, but what I have learned was that communication was the key to being successful (with group/collaborative work) as well as doing your part.

Also being decisive is one thing that I have noticed throughout the project. Debating on concepts and ideas took a long time, but once we pitched in ideas and made the final call with a vote sorts things out efficiently. Gathering information was not a simple task as we hoped to be as realistic as possible despite this project simply being a proposal. Getting accurate information can be quite time consuming.

Presenting our idea to the class happened to be one of the biggest challenges as some of us may find it uncomfortable when asked to do public speaking, myself included. But when everything is prepared and I have got everything I needed to deliver, it wasn't as patronizing as I initially imagined. It is also an essential skill to have (public speaking) or voicing out opinions amongst groups of people, especially when working collaboratively or with a collective.

STUDY TASK 8

Brave Bois - Our Collective

Research - Our Collective

'Creative Growth Art Center' - is a non profit center in California focused on creating a space for artists/creatives with disabilities.

  • They have exactly the ideas and concepts that we have in mind, which is to create an open and collaborative space for people to create art. Their little creative center is set as an art studio and their artworks got showcased in MoMa and have been invited Venice Biennale.
  • It seemed to have been a great success as they stated "...remain in high demand among collectors around the world."

STUDY TASK 10

Presentation - top-tips and strategies

  • Confidence - is something that I found important from today's session. As well as having a version of myself (a more professional version of myself)
  • Notes - I would love to be able to present without notes, however I personally find it useful so that I keep myself in track and not ramble
  • Bookend & Power of 3 - be engaging and talk about myself as a practitioner, rather than the general information
  • Rehearse - Making the effort to practice and rehearse is important. If I am confident of what I am presenting/speaking I feel more assured and probably have less chances of feeling pressured/anxious/forgetting what to say

Young Creatives - Our Collective

I've been tasked to do research and planning for the social media and networking aspect of our collective. This includes finding, business competitors, potential collaborators and clients.

One of the jobs I had as a student ambassador was help run an art workshop for children and teens. It was an insightful experience and in a way, it taught me the mechanics of running small taught sessions and workshops. It is something that our collective plan to do (hold art workshops) for adults with learning disabilities.

What will we do? - Our Collective

We had to roughly plan our lesson plan for the workshops that will be held. It would help us decide our budget and supply to run these workshops. We came up with a twelve week plan (including exhibition set ups) as it would be the most suitable to get a good amount of artwork made for the exhibition. It is also just the right amount of time needed to teach the students (not too long/short).

Brand Identity - Our Collective

Initial branding/logo

It took a while to decide our brand as it would be our identity and what our clients would see. Initially, thought of the maiden fern since it had an interesting meaning in which relates to the aim of our collective. But we decided to go for a more straightforward, colorful and shape driven theme/logo as it would be easier to understand.

We also looked at color schemes that would suit people with disabilities (lime green, super bright neons or dark colors should be avoided apparently)

Community & Market - Our Collective

www.sensoryleeds.com

There is an existing community or environment that does work with people that have learning disabilities (sensory impairments/mental health issues). The organization includes a space where they hold these programs and activities. In a way, there is already an existing market in this field (charity, volunteer, workshops, teaching).

Our task now is to consider our business competition through identifying our unique selling point and what it is that we can offer that other organizations might not have. Something new and fresh perhaps?

Online Presence - Our Collective

We thought that having an online presence is essential to our collective since it is a convenient and economical way of promoting ourselves in comparison to printing and posting flyers. However, since our target audience would generally use social media and information travels rather quickly through online networks, this might be one of the better solutions. However, we would still consider using traditional print methods of advertising (handing flyers or posters in support)

Design Aspect Our Collective

Our initial plan of our identity. We might need to change it because we felt that it didn't really suit the tone of voice of our collective.

STUDY TASK 6

Personal & Professional Practice - Creative Community? Haiku?

We raise awareness

One collaborative space,

Erase the stigma

Haiku exercise
Brainstorming words: 'creative' and 'positive'
  • Brainstorming helped sort the vision of our project and focus on our action plan. Thinking of our branding and identity might be a good first step to deciding who we are and what we have to offer.
  • Being decisive is crucial and effective as it got most of the planning sorted. Perhaps more research would also help provide a backbone to this project -especially when working with topics such as learning disabilities, it is good to be rather sensitive and knowledgable about this subject area.

STUDY TASK 7

Contact Report Progress - A response out of the five contacts

PIK Branch

Goods Dept store front & interior

I've finally gotten a response from one of the owners of Goods Department (a retail company). They specialize in importing and selling both local and niche fashion and streetwear. But they also have several restaurants which could be used as a space for collectives and art events. Fortunately he had given a rather detailed answer. It was a challenging task to simply reach out and email people.

I learned that it was enough to just be polite and be considerate of the other person. It was a hit or miss, some may reply, reply but is not available or not get a response at all. But it was a good opportunity to reach out and put myself out there.
